What is a crypto loan?
A crypto loan is a borrowing arrangement where digital assets are used as collateral. A borrower deposits or locks crypto, such as BTC, ETH, WBTC, staked ETH derivatives or another supported token, and receives a loan in a different asset. The borrowed asset is often a stablecoin, though some markets also permit borrowing volatile crypto assets.
The core reason people use crypto-backed loans is liquidity. A long-term BTC or ETH holder may want capital for expenses, trading, business activity or another investment without immediately selling the underlying asset. Selling ends market exposure and may create tax consequences depending on the borrower’s jurisdiction. Borrowing preserves exposure, but it also introduces debt, interest and liquidation risk.
Most crypto loans are collateralized. The collateral value is typically higher than the initial loan value because crypto markets can move quickly. If the value of collateral falls relative to the debt, the lender or protocol needs a mechanism to protect liquidity providers and prevent bad debt. That is the purpose of LTV limits, liquidation thresholds, price oracles and liquidations.
Short answer: a crypto loan is not free liquidity. It converts part of your crypto position into borrowing capacity, and the safety of that borrowing depends on collateral value, debt size, interest, market volatility and the lending protocol’s rules.
How crypto-backed loans work
Although the details vary between platforms, a typical collateralized lending flow follows the same sequence. The borrower supplies collateral, the protocol calculates how much can be borrowed, the borrower opens debt within that limit and the position must remain healthy as prices and interest change.
- Deposit collateral. You supply an approved crypto asset to a lending market or custody provider.
- Check borrowing capacity. The platform applies asset-specific risk parameters, including a maximum LTV and liquidation threshold.
- Borrow an asset. You borrow within the available limit, usually paying interest until the debt is repaid.
- Monitor the position. Collateral prices, borrowed-asset prices and interest accumulation can change the position’s risk profile.
- Repay or adjust. You repay the debt and accrued interest to unlock collateral, or add collateral/reduce debt if safety metrics weaken.
- Liquidation if necessary. If the account crosses the protocol’s liquidation conditions, some collateral may be sold or claimed to reduce the debt.
DeFi, CeFi and private credit models
DeFi lending typically uses smart contracts and on-chain collateral. The borrower interacts with a wallet rather than a traditional lender, while liquidity may come from decentralized pools. Risk rules such as collateral factors and liquidation thresholds are encoded in protocol logic or governed by the community.
Centralized crypto lenders can use company-managed custody, onboarding controls and off-chain operational processes. Their terms may include credit checks, account reviews, fixed agreements or different margin-call procedures. The user must evaluate counterparty and custody risk in addition to market risk.
Under-collateralized or credit-based models seek to use more than collateral alone. They may consider reputation, repayment history, institutional agreements, identity systems, legal recourse or on-chain credit data. These designs can improve capital efficiency for eligible borrowers, but they require deeper risk assessment because collateral provides less immediate loss protection.
What is LTV in crypto lending?
Loan-to-value, or LTV, is the ratio between the value of your loan and the current value of your collateral. It shows how much of the collateral’s value is already represented by debt. Because the collateral price can move, LTV is a dynamic number rather than a number that matters only on the day you borrow.
Suppose you deposit 2 ETH at $3,000 each. Your total collateral value is $6,000. If you borrow $2,400 in USDC, the initial LTV is 40%:
Now assume ETH falls to $2,000. The same two ETH are worth $4,000, while your $2,400 stablecoin debt is unchanged before interest. The LTV rises to 60%. You did not borrow more, but the position became riskier because the collateral backing each dollar of debt declined.
Why LTV matters
- Borrowing capacity: A protocol’s maximum LTV determines the largest loan that can be opened against a collateral asset.
- Risk buffer: Lower LTV means more room for a collateral drawdown before liquidation conditions are approached.
- Capital efficiency: Higher LTV lets users access more liquidity from the same collateral value, but it reduces the safety margin.
- Asset selection: More volatile or less liquid collateral often has lower permitted LTV than highly liquid assets.

LTV vs liquidation threshold vs borrow limit
These terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe different parts of a lending market’s risk design. Understanding the distinction is essential before you compare protocols or decide how much to borrow.
Maximum LTV or borrow limit
The maximum LTV is usually the highest ratio at which a user can open or increase a borrow position. If a market has a 75% maximum LTV, $10,000 in qualifying collateral may provide up to $7,500 of initial borrowing capacity. This is an entry limit, not necessarily the point at which liquidation begins.
Liquidation threshold
The liquidation threshold is the risk-adjusted collateral level used to determine when a position becomes eligible for liquidation. It is often higher than the maximum LTV to create a buffer between opening a position and crossing the danger zone. A protocol may allow borrowing up to one percentage while using a different percentage to calculate liquidation eligibility.
Current LTV
Your current LTV is the real-time relationship between debt and collateral value. It can change every time the collateral price, debt-asset price or outstanding interest changes. It is specific to your position rather than a static protocol parameter.

Do not borrow to the displayed maximum simply because it is available. A maximum borrowing limit is not a recommendation. A position can have little practical room for volatility, interest accrual or a sudden change in market conditions even if it opens successfully.
How to calculate crypto liquidation price
Liquidation price is the approximate collateral price at which a position may become eligible for liquidation, assuming one collateral asset and a debt amount that does not change in market value. It is a useful planning figure, but it is not a universal promise: real positions can be affected by accrued interest, multiple assets, market-specific configurations and oracle methodology.
For a simplified case, use this formula:
Assume again that you deposited 2 ETH and borrowed $2,400. If the liquidation threshold is 80%, the estimated liquidation price is:
At $1,500 per ETH, the collateral value is $3,000. Applying the 80% liquidation threshold gives risk-adjusted collateral of $2,400, which matches the simplified debt amount. A further decline, or any increase in debt due to interest, can make the position eligible for liquidation.
Health factor explained
Many DeFi lending interfaces display a health factor rather than a single liquidation price. In a simplified one-asset position, health factor can be expressed as:
A health factor above 1 generally indicates the position is above the liquidation boundary under the relevant model. A health factor of 1 is the boundary. Below 1, the position may be eligible for liquidation. The higher the value, the larger the buffer, but there is no one health-factor target suitable for every asset or user.
Why your actual liquidation price can move
- Borrowing interest increases the debt over time.
- The borrowed asset may be volatile rather than dollar-pegged.
- Several collateral assets can rise and fall at different rates.
- Protocols can have e-mode, isolation mode, supply caps or other market-specific rules.
- Oracle prices may use time-weighting, update conditions or other safeguards that differ from exchange spot prices.
- Governance can change risk parameters, subject to the process and rules of the protocol.
How to calculate crypto loan interest and repayment cost
Borrowing cost is not limited to the principal. You also need to estimate interest over the period you expect to hold the loan. The calculator uses a simple-interest estimate because it is easy to understand and compare:
For a $2,400 loan at 8% APR held for 90 days, estimated simple interest is approximately $47.34:
The estimated repayment would be $2,447.34. In a live protocol, the figure can differ because rates may be variable, interest can accrue continuously or per block, fees may apply and the debt token itself may change in value.
APR vs APY
APR is an annualized rate that generally does not assume compounding in the headline figure. APY is an annualized yield that includes compounding over a defined period. When reviewing a borrowing product, confirm whether the displayed rate is APR or APY, whether it is fixed or variable and whether it applies only to interest or also excludes fees.
Fixed vs variable borrow rates
A fixed rate can make repayment planning easier if the rate remains fixed according to the loan agreement. A variable rate can rise or fall with utilization, liquidity conditions, governance parameters or the protocol’s interest-rate strategy. A low rate today may not be the rate you pay for the entire life of a variable-rate loan.

Crypto loan examples: BTC and ETH scenarios
The examples below demonstrate why starting LTV matters. They are simplified illustrations, not suggested borrowing levels or live market terms.
Example 1: Borrowing against BTC
Assume 1 BTC is worth $80,000, the loan is denominated in a dollar-pegged stablecoin and the liquidation threshold is 80%. The estimated liquidation price changes dramatically depending on how much is borrowed.

The 60% LTV position produces three times more liquidity than the 20% LTV position, but it has only a 25% modeled price buffer to the liquidation boundary. If the borrower cannot add collateral or repay quickly, that smaller buffer can become decisive in a volatile market.
Example 2: Borrowing against ETH with accrued interest
Assume a borrower deposits 10 ETH at $3,000 each, creating $30,000 of collateral. They borrow $12,000 at 40% starting LTV. At an 80% liquidation threshold, the simple estimated liquidation price before interest is $1,500 per ETH.
Now assume the loan accrues $360 in interest and the outstanding debt becomes $12,360. The estimated liquidation price rises to $1,545 per ETH. The borrower’s collateral has not changed, but the safety buffer has narrowed because the debt is larger.
This is why loan monitoring should include debt growth, not only the spot price of collateral.
How to manage crypto loan and liquidation risk
Borrowing responsibly is less about predicting the exact future price of crypto and more about planning for unfavorable conditions. A well-managed position has a clear response plan before the market moves.
- Start below your maximum borrowing capacity. Leave room for ordinary volatility rather than treating the maximum LTV as the target.
- Stress-test the collateral. Check what your LTV and health factor would look like after a 20%, 30%, 40% or larger price decline.
- Track interest growth. Variable rates and accumulated debt can reduce the buffer even in a flat market.
- Keep repayment liquidity available. Have a plan to repay part of the debt if your position approaches an uncomfortable risk level.
- Know how to add collateral. Confirm which assets are eligible and how long transfers, bridges or wallet approvals could take before you need them.
- Use alerts, but do not rely on them alone. Alerts can fail, arrive late or be missed. Monitor positions directly during periods of high volatility.
- Understand the liquidation process. Review penalties, close factors, liquidation bonuses and whether the protocol can partially or fully liquidate a position.
Practical example: if a borrower needs $10,000 in stablecoins but has $30,000 of volatile collateral, borrowing $10,000 creates a 33.33% starting LTV. Borrowing $20,000 creates a 66.67% starting LTV. The second position offers more cash now, but it leaves far less flexibility if the collateral drops or the debt becomes more expensive.
Risks of borrowing against crypto
Crypto-backed borrowing can be useful, but it carries risks that should be understood independently of any calculator output. The following list is not exhaustive, and risks can interact during market stress.
- Market volatility: A rapid drop in collateral value can raise LTV and trigger liquidation before the borrower has time to respond.
- Liquidation loss: Liquidation can result in loss of collateral, liquidation bonuses and fees, even if the market later recovers.
- Interest-rate risk: Variable borrowing rates can increase, raising the debt more quickly than expected.
- Debt-asset risk: If you borrow a volatile asset instead of a stablecoin, the debt’s dollar value can rise as well.
- Smart-contract risk: DeFi protocols can contain vulnerabilities, implementation errors or dependencies on other systems.
- Oracle risk: Lending markets depend on price data. Oracle delays, bad data, market dislocations or design limitations can affect risk calculations.
- Liquidity risk: Low market liquidity can worsen execution, increase slippage or affect a protocol’s ability to manage stressed positions.
- Stablecoin and bridge risk: Stablecoins may depeg, and bridged assets introduce additional dependency and security considerations.
- Counterparty and custody risk: Centralized lenders can expose users to business failure, withdrawal restrictions or custody loss.
- Regulatory and tax risk: Rules and tax treatment vary by jurisdiction and can change. Seek qualified local advice where appropriate.
Why risk data matters for capital-efficient crypto lending
Collateral is the simplest on-chain protection against borrower default: the protocol can measure it, price it and liquidate it. But collateral-only lending also limits capital efficiency. A user with valuable on-chain history, responsible borrowing behavior and a lower risk profile can still receive the same generic terms as a wallet with no observable history.
On-chain credit scoring and risk data aim to give lending protocols additional inputs for evaluating risk. Depending on the design, wallet-level signals can inform eligibility, borrowing limits, pricing, collateral requirements or reward structures. Such signals do not make lending risk-free and should not be treated as a guarantee of repayment. They can, however, help protocols move from one-size-fits-all collateral rules toward more granular risk management.
