LTV, or loan-to-value, is one of the most important numbers in crypto lending. Learn how to calculate it, why it changes, how it relates to liquidation risk and how to evaluate a borrowing position before you open it.

What does LTV mean in crypto?

LTV stands for loan-to-value. In crypto lending, it measures the size of your loan compared with the current market value of the crypto you deposit as collateral. A lower LTV means you have borrowed less relative to collateral. A higher LTV means you have borrowed more, which can improve capital efficiency but usually increases liquidation risk.

For example, if you deposit crypto worth $10,000 and borrow $4,000, your loan-to-value ratio is 40%. If the collateral falls to $8,000 while your debt remains $4,000, LTV rises to 50%. You have not taken a larger loan, but your position is now more leveraged because the collateral backing the debt is worth less.

How to calculate loan-to-value in crypto

The LTV formula is straightforward. Divide the total value of the loan by the current market value of the collateral, then multiply by 100 to express the result as a percentage.

LTV = Total loan value ÷ Current collateral value × 100

Imagine a borrower deposits 1 BTC when BTC is priced at $80,000. They borrow $24,000 in a dollar-pegged stablecoin. The calculation is:

$24,000 ÷ $80,000 × 100 = 30% LTV

If BTC declines to $64,000, the debt is still $24,000 before interest. The updated calculation becomes:

$24,000 ÷ $64,000 × 100 = 37.50% LTV

LTV rises whenever debt increases faster than collateral value, or when collateral value falls while debt stays unchanged. It falls when collateral value rises, debt is repaid or additional collateral is supplied.

How to calculate required collateral

You can rearrange the same formula to estimate how much collateral you need for a target loan and LTV:

Required collateral value = Loan amount ÷ Target LTV

For a $10,000 loan at a 40% target LTV, the required collateral value is $25,000. If ETH is worth $2,500, that equals 10 ETH, before accounting for any protocol-specific restrictions or fees.

Why LTV matters in crypto lending

LTV is more than a number displayed on a dashboard. It directly influences how much liquidity you can unlock, how exposed you are to volatility and how much time you may have to respond during a market decline.

  • It sets borrowing capacity. Lending markets normally define a maximum LTV for each collateral asset, which limits the initial loan size.
  • It shows leverage. A higher LTV means a larger debt burden relative to collateral value.
  • It affects liquidation risk. As LTV rises, the gap between collateral value and debt narrows.
  • It helps compare loan choices. Two loans can have the same dollar amount but very different risk if the collateral sizes differ.

Assets with higher volatility, lower liquidity or more uncertain pricing often receive more conservative risk parameters. How collateral affects crypto borrowing capacity

Collateral is the crypto asset pledged to support a loan. In overcollateralized lending, you generally need to supply more collateral value than the loan you receive. This structure gives the protocol room to manage volatility and repay lenders if the borrower’s position becomes unhealthy.

The same collateral value can produce different available borrowing capacity depending on the market. Maximum LTV is an availability limit, not a suggestion to borrow the full amount. If market conditions change, the same position can become significantly riskier in minutes. A lower personal target may be appropriate for borrowers who use volatile collateral or cannot monitor their account closely.

How LTV affects liquidation risk

Liquidation occurs when a borrowing position no longer satisfies the protocol’s collateral requirements. In many DeFi markets, the protocol uses a liquidation threshold and a health factor rather than liquidating at a single publicly stated LTV for every scenario. Still, LTV is an intuitive way to understand why a position becomes vulnerable.

Suppose a borrower has $10,000 of collateral and $6,000 of debt. Their LTV is 60%. If the collateral falls to $7,500, the LTV rises to 80%. If the protocol’s risk settings place the liquidation boundary around that level for this simple example, the position may become eligible for liquidation.

Actual liquidation mechanics depend on the protocol. A liquidator may repay part of the debt and receive collateral at a discount, or the system may use another method to restore solvency. The borrower can lose some or all of the collateral involved in the liquidation, along with any applicable bonuses or fees.

Estimated liquidation price

For a position with one collateral asset, stable-value debt and a known liquidation threshold, an approximate liquidation price can be calculated as:

Estimated liquidation price = Total debt ÷ (Collateral amount × Liquidation threshold)

For 2 ETH collateral, $2,400 debt and an 80% threshold, the estimated liquidation price is:

$2,400 ÷ (2 × 0.80) = $1,500 per ETH

Interest, fees, a changing debt-asset price, multiple collateral assets and oracle methodology can all make the actual liquidation point different. Treat any simple estimate as a planning reference rather than a guarantee.

LTV vs health factor vs liquidation threshold

LTV, health factor and liquidation threshold all describe risk, but they are not interchangeable. Using the right metric helps prevent common mistakes when comparing lending products.

In a simplified position, health factor can be expressed as:

Example 2: ETH collateral with a partial repayment

A user deposits 10 ETH worth $3,000 each, for $30,000 total collateral, and borrows $15,000. The initial LTV is 50%. If ETH falls to $2,400, collateral falls to $24,000 and LTV rises to 62.50%.

If the borrower repays $3,000, debt falls to $12,000. At the same $24,000 collateral value, LTV returns to 50%. This illustrates why partial repayments can be a direct tool for reducing risk, even when the collateral price does not recover.

Example 3: Adding collateral

In the same ETH scenario, the borrower could instead add $6,000 of eligible collateral. With debt still at $15,000 and total collateral back to $30,000, the LTV becomes 50%. Whether this is possible depends on which assets the protocol accepts and how quickly the borrower can transfer them.

What is a safe LTV for a crypto loan?

These bands are not recommendations. A 40% LTV can be too high for one volatile collateral asset and very different from a 40% LTV on another asset or market. Always stress-test the actual loan against adverse price movement and debt growth.

How to manage your LTV after borrowing

LTV should be monitored for the entire life of a loan, not just calculated once at origination. A clear management plan can reduce the chance of having to react under pressure.

  1. Calculate a downside scenario before borrowing. Test the effect of a 20%, 30%, 40% and more severe collateral decline.

Collateral ratios are the base layer of risk management in most DeFi lending markets. They are transparent, automated and immediately enforceable. However, they do not capture every dimension of borrower quality or wallet behavior.

On-chain credit scoring, reputation data and other risk signals can potentially complement LTV-based lending. A protocol may use these inputs to create more granular eligibility rules, borrowing limits or terms. That does not make lending risk-free, and collateral remains important in many designs.
